Another Marshall County Relay for Life is in the books. Last weekend’s event was the 24th relay sponsored by the Marshall County unit of the American Cancer Society. The relay raised $61,858.08 this year. The local Cancer Society also expects to receive more contributions in the next couple of months.
The fundraiser this year was held in the Britton-Hecla school arena. The theme of the relay was “Every Step Brings Hope.” To start the event, all the cancer survivors present led the Pledge of Allegiance. Next, cancer survivors were recognized. 28 survivors registered at this year’s event and Carol Benda, the oldest survivor present, was recognized. Luminary bags were displayed and formed a path around the arena.
The six relay teams participating this year were the Lake City Leading ladies who have had a team since the event started in 2000. They also won the contest for the best campsite this year. Cheryl’s Stars team is in memory of Cheryl Dinger Stiegelmeier who died in 2010. Cousin’s Crusade Against Cancer has been participating for 21 years and is known as the “Bingo Family” who led the relay-favorite bingo games. Wacky Walkers have been involved in the relay since it started and walk in memory of Corinne Bosse. Archie’s Turtle’s is a team that was formed from the Monroe family team and the Wells Fargo Turtles. They annually raise funds through a big pie auction and meat raffles. The Eden Muskrats also raised funds again this year.
During the course of the day, various activities were held to raise additional funds.
Concessions were sold by various teams. A silent auction was held and the Cousin’s Crusade team hosted bingo. The Zuehlke brothers, Jake and Luke, along with their cousin Travis Moore also entertained the crowd during the evening with some fun music.
The event wound down late in the evening with the names read of those recognized on luminaries. Over 800 luminaries were sold this year and many solar lights had been purchased in honor or memory of those with cancer.
A somber candlelight ceremony wrapped up the relay as Dan Tracy sang “Amazing Grace.” Additionally, reflection candles were lit and a special prayer offered at many Marshall County churches during services last weekend.
The organizers of the relay were happy with the event and the funds raised this year. Co-chair Marie Marlow who took over the relay with sister Cyndy Grandpre said that even though attendance was a little lower, they are still raising an impressive amount of money for cancer research. “I think that people really enjoyed it and the arena ended up being a great location,” added Marlow.
Next year is the 25th anniversary of the relay. Marlow aims to have at least 25 teams participate. She noted that the event will move back to the Britton Event Center.
Since beginning in 2000, the Marshall County Relay for Life has raised over $1.5 million to help fund cancer research, education and patient programs and services.
