JIM POLKINGHORN

The Celebration of Life for Jim Polkinghorn will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023 at First Lutheran Church in Britton. Rev. Terrill Sorensen will officiate.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

James “Jim” Earl Polkinghorn was born January 11, 1949 to Robert “Bob” and Catherine Lucile (Lumbatis) Polkinghorn in Laurium, Michigan. In his younger years his family moved often as Bob worked for the JCPenney Co. before the family settled in Britton, SD. While in high school, Jim played Legion baseball (with his team going to two state tournaments) and working for the Britton Journal. He graduated from Britton High School in 1967. After graduation, Jim attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and earned a teaching degree. He taught for a brief time and found it was not his calling. In Aberdeen, Jim worked for the Northern Oil Co. before he moved back to Britton. After returning Jim worked for Daryl Brash building grain bins, Maynard Eikamp at the Texaco Station, Red Siers doing carpenter work and settled in at Cenex working for Kenny Stillson. Jim liked his cars. Some of his cars included a 1964 Chevy Impala and two Camaros-one white, one yellow.

OnMay28,1982Jimmarried Sandra “Sandi” McDonough Fahrenholz. He welcomed her children as his own. On April 1, 1993 they started operating “Jim & Sandi’s Clear Lake Lodge” near Lake City, SD. Due to health reasons, they closed the lodge and retired in 2005. Jim was a hardworking and patient man. He was a friend to all and loved to visit. Family was very important to him and he cherished the memories with the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved sports, primarily playing fast pitch and slow pitch softball. He also bowled and golfed. He was a member at Lake City Lutheran Church serving as a trustee and serving on the Lake Township Board for a number of years. In October 2021, Jim and Sandra moved to Sioux Falls, SD.

Jim passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023 in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 74.

Jim is survived by his wife Sandra, E. Scott (Tammy) Fahrenholz, Jenni (Brian) Seyer, all of Oakes, ND and Timothy (Tamie) Fahrenholz of Union Center, SD; grandchildren: Natasha (Blair) Kemmer, Matthew Dill, Danielle (Zachary) Hembree-Mueller, Marc Seyer, Kira and Samantha Fahrenholz; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Alice (Larry) Lewis, Tom (Louise) Polkinghorn, John (Tanya) Polkinghorn and Bill (Peter) Polkinghorn; along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jim in death were his parents, Bob and Lucile and his grandparents.
