Opal Umberger was born on March 8, 1937 to Ralph and Florence (Cease) Umberger in Britton, SD. Growing up she attended school in Britton. She was an excellent speller and won many spelling bees.

On April 13, 1953 Opal was united in marriage to Kenneth Kann. They made their home on the family farm near Britton. To this union seven children were born: Debbie, Greg, Carol, George, Sandra, Clinton and Steve. As she said, “I had seven children in six years and all by the time I was 22.” She was so proud of her children.

Over the years she worked various jobs in the Britton area, along with the family farm and hay moving business. Throughout her life she always showed strength and resilience and will be remembered for all of her hard work. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and enjoyed making meals and treats for family and friends. She made the best potato salad in all of South Dakota!
