When she is at ‘work,’ you won’t find photographer Bridget Samson in a studio. You’ll find her on the shorelines at nearby lakes, hanging out in a family’s living room, traipsing through tall grass on someone’s home farm or at one of hundreds of other outdoor locations. This is all by design. Samson’s goal is to capture the real life of families, one photo at a time. And as her business has grown over the recent years, she is finding her niche more and more.
Samson is a native of Hosmer, SD, an hour west of Aberdeen. She graduated from Edmunds Central High School, growing up in a farming family. Originally, photography wasn’t really in her plans. Though she says she enjoyed creativity when young, she was intent on working with children. Consequently, she went to school to be an Occupational Therapy Assistant and added a Child Development associate.
An opportunity to work with children and families in a different capacity than Samson expected would soon arise. It began on the sidelines of a football field. Samson was working at Roncalli Primary School while her brother was a high school football player there. She found herself taking sideline photos during games with her mom’s camera that had an advanced sports lens.
This was the beginning of Samson’s journey to discovering her love for photography. She decided to purchase a full frame camera and began branching out about seven years ago. “Slowly, I learned more about both shooting and editing and began tackling family sessions,” explained Samson.
