Verona Eileen Schroeder was born September 20, 1922 in Langford, SD to Robert F. and Emma T. (Greger) Schroeder. While a young girl her family lived in Wisconsin for a few years before moving back to Nutley Township in Day County, SD. She attended her early schooling at Nutley Country School #164 before going to Roslyn School.

On October 5, 1939 she married Robert P. Knebel in Eden and they moved to a farm only ½ a mile from where she grew up. Along with helping Robert with farm work, she also worked a few years at Dakotah. Robert passed away October 28, 1991. Verona stayed on the farm until she was 88 years old. Due to flooding at their farm, she moved to an apartment in Eden in 2010. Her years in Eden became time she would cherish and friendships she would treasure.

Verona was a woman who could make something out of nothing, and she did so her whole life. She loved anything with crafts and creating. She sewed hundreds of blankets and loved to donate them or give one to a special family member or friend. Before her eyesight started to go, she loved to read books and would later continue to listen to audio books. She enjoyed history and still at 101, was full of interesting facts and knowledge. Each year she would look forward to family reunions and being surrounded by all her family. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Verona passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023 at her apartment in Eden at the age of 101.

She is survived by her children: Lois Gowan of Watertown, SD, Neil (Lorrie) Knebel of Watertown, SD, and Donald (Dawn) Knebel of Buda, TX; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and her dear friends who have helped her these past years: Mike and the late Mary Dunn, Vivian and Elmer Steiner and Chery Neuberger; and the whole town of Eden who treated her so well.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her two sons, Paul and Robert; two infant sons at birth; three sisters: Lorene Ruecker, Roberta Schroeder and Norman Jodice; and one brother, Donald Schroeder.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Lois Gowan – 213 10th Ave NE – Watertown, SD 57201.
