Two of the three defending South Dakota state volleyball champions defended their titles last weekend in Rapid City.
Sioux Falls Christian wrapped up its season with a 3-1 win over Rapid City Christian to claim the Class A crown and runs its streak of consecutive state titles to seven, also winning 11 of the past 13 Class A championships. Class AA Harrisburg was the only squad to end up with a perfect season at 31-0, defeating Sioux Falls Washington 3-1 for its third title in school history.
Warner entered Class B tournament play with a perfect 37-0 mark but Chester avenged a loss to the Monarchs in last year’s championship with a five-set thriller to spoil Warner’s bid for a third straight crown.
In other matches in the Class A tournament fifth seed Dell Rapids downed three seed Miller 3-0 to take third place honors, seven seed Dakota Valley defeated four seed Platte-Gedde3s 3-1 for the consolation championship, and six seed Wagner blanked eight seed Lennox 3-0 for seventh.
Second seed Sioux Falls Jefferson finished third with a 3-0 win over fifth seed Sioux Falls O’Gorman. Fourth seed Watertown stopped 10th seed Brandon Valley 3-1 for consolation honors, and sixth seed Sioux Falls Lincoln defeated eight seed Aberdeen Central 3-1 for seventh.
Fourth seed Burke rolled past sixth seed Castlewood 30 for third place in the Class B tournament, third seed Colman-Egan edged fifth seed Wolsey-Wessington 3-2 for the consolation title, and seventh seed Faulkton Area swept eighth seed Gayville-Volin 3-0 for seventh.
