The lid was on the basket for the Britton-Hecla girls basketball squad in the second quarter and the Lady Braves couldn’t quite erase a 10point deficit in a 42-38 loss to Webster Area on Friday.
Coach Terry Nelson’s club, now 1-2, will host Deuel as part of a twin bill with the boys’ squad on Thursday and Florence-Henry comes to town for a girls’ game on Friday to wrap up the pre-Christmas schedule. B-H will be off for 11 days before traveling to Milbank on Jan. 2.
The local cagers battled Webster Area to a 10-10 tie after one period but then went 117 from the field in the second quarter and trailed 22-12 at halftime. B-H cut that margin to seven after three periods but could not get all the way back in the four-point loss.
“We were shooting the ball good in practice for two days until that quarter,” said Nelson. “But the girls didn’t give up and put together a late run to get back in the game. A couple of times we were right there and all of a sudden we would throw the ball away or miss an easy shot or free throw.
“We only shot 27% for the game and you have to hit 35% to win games,” added Nelson. “We’re also averaging 48 points a game and giving up 50, so we have to slow the other team down and make them work for baskets instead of us.”
Sterling Brassfield and Tiyanna Schott both laced 12 points to lead the Lady Braves.
