Braves Pick Up First Victory

Host Doubleheader On Monday
Braves Pick Up First Victory

The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season over Redfield on Thursday but dropped decisions to Great Plains Lutheran and Milbank in the past week, falling to 1-6 on the season.

The Braves were back in action last night Tuesday against Wilmot, travel to Florence-Henry on Thursday, and host Waubay-Summit on Monday.

The Braves threatened to blow this contest open on several occasions, but Redfield kept hanging around until BH finally put the game away in the final two minutes.

“Against Redfield we won on the boards and also had 3-4 guys score significantly for us which always helps,” said B-H coach Troy Knecht. “The ball moved around the perimeter a lot better which is key to any good offense. We did have a few defensive lapses as far as helping out on penetration, but all in all it was good effort and I was happy to see the boys get a win.”

B-H came out firing, riding treys from Jordyn McGregor, Dawson Treeby, and Ben Folkman to a 15-4 first quarter advantage. McGregor hit a free toss to open the second period and Ty Fagerland added a fielder to push the lead to 18-6 at the 5:39 mark of the second stanza, but Redfield responded with a 12-0 run to knot the game at 18-all with 2:28 left in the half. Treeby, who connected on five shots from beyond the arc in the game, hit another and Graham Fosness put in a follow shot for a 23-20 halftime lead. Then the Braves came up with a 10-3 run to open the second half, led by Daniel Person’s seven points during a two-minute stretch, and again threatened to take charge with a 33-23 margin. But back came the Pheasants again, cutting that lead to 39-35 after three quarters.

Person responded with six straight points, Treeby hit another trey, and McGregor scored off a Person assist to give the Braves what looked to be a comfortable 51-39 lead with 5:18 left. But again Redfield cut that margin to 5549 at the 2:33 mark before the Braves outscored the visitors 7-3 down the stretch.

Great Plains Lutheran 57 Britton-Hecla 19

Great Plains Lutheran outscored the Braves 16-0 in the second quarter to take charge.

Chaz Vietor led B-H with five points and Ty Fagerland added four.

“I thought we started the game out with good intensity and an understanding of what we wanted to do defensively,” noted Knecht. “GPL has a talented group and I was really happy with our first quarter We were more physical and they had a hard time getting to the basket. Unfortunately we didn’t score in the second quarter and in the second half we only mustered 10 points.

“I was happy with the kids effort but it’s very difficult to maintain defensive intensity when the ball doesn’t go in Less than 20% shooting pretty much makes it impossible to win. The reality of our situation is that there’s little room for error. We will have to win the rebounding battle, turn it over very little, and be perfect on defense if we are going to be in ball games. We continue to spend time shooting so hopefully our confidence grows and we can get better there. If it does I think we can still be a completive team.”
