LA Girls Win Four Straight

The Langford Area girls basketball team took a fourgame winning streak into a Lake Region Conference contest with Warner last night Tuesday.

The Lady Lions, now 66, downed North Central 48-31 on Saturday, defeated Waverly-South Shore 4427 on Thursday, and stopped Hankinson, ND, 41-14 last week Tuesday.

This week LA hosts Northwestern in a doubleheader with the boys’ squad on Friday (JV boys 4 p.m., JV girls, varsity boys, varsity girls to follow), and on Monday plays Waubay-Summit in Waubay (JV 6:15 p.m., varsity to follow).

“Our girls have been playing well on the defensive end,” said LA coach Michael Alberts. “We have been able to create turnovers leading to more scoring opportunities on our end. We have also done a pretty good job of crashing the offensive boards lately leading to second chance points.

“The girls have really been making some nice plays on the offensive end as well,” Alberts added. “We have done a good job of penetrating and finishing, getting to the free throw line, or making nice passes to find the open girl. We are continuing to work on playing faster but under control and to keep getting better on both ends of the court.”

Langford Area rode a 121 second period run to a 22-9 halftime lead and padded that margin to 19 after three quarters on the way to its sixth win.

Megan Gustafson, who had a game-high 23 points, hit six counters in the early going to lead the Lady Lions to a 108 edge after the opening eight minutes. But then LA reeled off 10 straight to open the second stanza and led 22-9 at halftime.

Gustafson caught fire in the third period, scoring 12 points in the first six minutes, including a trey, boosting the Lady Lions to a 36-14 lead. North Central did hit three straight treys to end the third period and open the fourth, quickly cutting the margin to 39-23, but Alex Darling sunk a pair of free tosses and Gustafson hit another trey to put the game away.

Marlow and Darling both had nine points to support Gustafson’s effort.
