Local Chapter Plans FFA Week

    The 110 chapters and 6142 members that make up the South Dakota FFA will celebrate National FFA Week next week, Feb. 17-24. Locally, the Langford Area FFA chapter is also looking forward to this special week. 
    It’s a time to share what FFA is and the impact it has on members every day. National FFA Week embraces more than 95 years of FFA traditions while looking forward to the organization’s future. Designated a national week in 1947, the week of George Washington’s birthday, National FFA Week runs from Saturday to Saturday and gives FFA members an opportunity to educate the public about agriculture.
    “National FFA week is a special time for our organization and something we look forward to all year,” Gerri Ann Eide, Executive Director of the South Dakota FFA Foundation, said. “We enjoy any time when we can help educate the public about agriculture, so having a week designated to that cause is very valuable to us.”
     During the week, chapters conduct a variety of activities to help others in their schools and communities learn about FFA and agricultural education. This includes the LA FFA Chapter, who has many fun events planned for next week.
    The chapter’s advisor AnnaMarie Sachs said the activities include themed dress up days such as “here by the plow” and “here by the ear of corn”. “We will also be doing an emblem scavenger hunt in the school, a kiss the pig contest with staff in the school, and a “you’ve been flushed” fundraiser,” said Sachs. LA  Elementary students will compete in a coloring contest and the school will end the week with the “Ag- Olympics” where classes will again vie  for the Tractor Trophy. 
    According to the advisor, FFA Week is a way to celebrate students that choose to participate and excel in FFA and Ag Classes. “We get to show the community what we have been working on all year and why our students are passionate about the future of agriculture. We’re also excited for the community to see the changes to the organization since they may have participated and the growth we have accomplished since starting last year.”
