Britton-Hecla’s track squad wrapped up its regular season at Warner yesterday (Tuesday), and heading into that meet Coach Stephanie Symen’s crew had 10 events qualified for the state meet set for Sioux Falls May 23-25.
That number could change based on final meets this week. The top 24 performers in each event will punch their ticket to the state event.
The local thinclads hosted the Eastern Coteau Conference meet last week Tuesday, finishing second in the girls’ division and third in the boys’ bracket.
Both the B-H junior high boys and girls won team titles and Ailyn Lee set a new girls junior high triple jump meet record.
On Thursday Britton-Hecla competed in the Northeast Conference meet in Sisseton, placing seventh in the girls’ division and the boys placed ninth.
“We finally had a nice day on Thursday for the NEC met,” said Symens. “We had several relays drops lots of seconds and are now in the top 24. We also had several athletes cut times off of their individual runs. We are excited to finish off the season.”
The girls 400 and 3200 relays, and the boys 3200 quartet all had season-best times at Sisseton.
As of Tuesday, four individuals were ranked among the top 24 in the state. Daniel Person is the only boy to qualify in an individual event so far, standing 17th in the 1600meter run and 21st in the 3200 run. Three girls rank in the top 24 – Abby Lee is ninth and Taryn Kraft 23rd in triple jump, and Kara McLaen is 18th in the 1600 run.
Three boys relay teams and two girls quartets are in position to move on to the state meet. The boys 3200 quartet of Ben Suther, Jaxon Zuehlke, Will Richter, and Daniel Person ranks 13th, the medley relay team of Dashel Davidson, Bryce Hawkinson, Suther, and Person is 17th, and the 1600 unit of Suther, (Continued from Page 6 ) Hawkinson, Will Richter, and Person is in the 23rd spot.
