The funeral service for Marian Mettler will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 27, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hecla, SD. Rev. Sara Sorensen will officiate the service. Spring interment will be in the Houghton Cemetery under the direction of the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 26, 2023 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the church, concluding with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.

Marian L. Gagnum was born March 5, 1935 to Jul and Mildred (Borchers) Gagnum in Portland, OR. When Marian was four, her family moved back to the Houghton area and they made their home on the family farm. She attended country schools around Houghton and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1953.

On July 21, 1956, she married Allen A. Mettler in Aberdeen. To this union one son, Rick, was born in 1958. In her early working years, she was a bookkeeper for Bush Cattle Co mpany and the Collection Point in Columbia selling hogs and cattle. She also worked for SD Wheat Growers in Columbia. In the 1990s, she worked at Sheldahl’s in Britton doing line work assembling computer boards.

Marian and Allen moved to the family farm in 1974 before making their final home in Houghton in 1984. While living in Houghton, they mowed the Houghton Cemetery, Post Office and City Park. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and active in the Ladies Group. She and Allen were active in the National Farmers Organization for several years. Allen passed away October 14, 2012, and Marian remained in Houghton.

In their younger years, Marian andAllen loved to dance at the Britton Rainbow Club and Tacoma Park. She loved flowers and gardening. She enjoyed cooking and baking and had two tins filled with family recipes, but many she was able to recite from memory. Family was important to Marian and she looked forward to family reunions. In her later years, she loved going to the Hankinson Casino with her cousins.

Marian passed Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen, at the age of 87.

She is survived by her son, Rick; three grandchildren: Angie, Jason and April; greatgrandchildren; many nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and extended family members.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Mildred and Jul Gagnum; her husband, Allen; and sister, Joyce Knecht.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to Houghton Cemetery Fund.
