Britton Library Opens Doors To Blind, Impaired

In a move towards inclusivity and accessibility, the Britton Public Library is reaching out to individuals with visual impairments or reading disabilities, offering a range of services tailored to their needs.
Through collaboration with the state, the Britton Public Library provides access to the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS), a free library service designed for individuals facing visual challenges or reading disabilities. This initiative aims to bridge the gap in access to literature and information for those who may struggle with traditional print materials.
The NLS offers a comprehensive range of resources, including audio books and magazines, braille materials, music materials, and a digital library known as BARD. BARD stands for  Braille and Audio Reading Download service, which enables patrons to select specific titles and download them directly to their devices. This digital library houses a vast collection, including every digital book available through the South Dakota State Library.
To facilitate the circulation of materials, the NLS offers two convenient methods for receiving and returning books and magazines. Patrons can opt for the BARD service or utilize the U.S. Postal Service, with all materials sent through the mail classified as “Free Matter for the Blind” and exempt from postage fees.
For those who would struggle to access audio materials on their own device, the NLS provides the device, a talking-book player, free of charge upon request during the sign-up process.
Britton Library Assistant Director Shelly Kann emphasized the support provided by the library staff in assisting users with setting up equipment and navigating the available services. “The state can even come in and help users set up their equipment,” she added.
Britton Public Library has already assisted local patrons in accessing these services, guiding them through the necessary paperwork and offering ongoing support. Individuals interested in accessing these resources or obtaining more information are encouraged to visit the library or contact them at 605-448-2800.

The Britton Public Library offers access to a number of services that can assist those with visual or learning impairments with help reading. The library provides access to such services through the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, including the possibility of receiving a free of charge talking book player like that pictured.
