U14 Squad Tunes Up For Regional Tourney

Burger Hurls No-Hitter

The Britton U14 Junior Teener baseball team tuned up for the Region 1B tournament that begins on Monday by sweeping Sisseton 16-5 and 30 last week Tuesday.

Coach BJ Richter’s club will open Region 1 Class B tournament play in Groton on Monday at 5 p.m. against Webster. The winner of the first contest will play Groton immediately following the opener. The two losers will meet in the double elimination format at 5 p.m. Tuesday with the second game to follow. A final contest, if needed, will be played next week Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Region champions will advance to the state Class B tourney in Garretson July 26-28.

“I’d like to thank Sisseton again for hosting us,” said Richter, whose club has not been able to play home games due to the refurbishing of the field. “They rescheduled and hosted us for our original home game, lined up umpires, and had a full day. It was nice to play an afternoon game on a beautiful field.”

Britton received a pair of dominant pitching performances against Sisseton, including a no-hitter, along with some timely hitting.

“Our pitching again was stellar, with game one starter Lincoln Kilker throwing a ton of strikes (67%) in an effective outing and earning the win,” said Richter. “In game two, Mitchell Burger logged a nohitter after just missing a nohit bid earlier this year with a late game single. Kaden Mills and Jack Teveldal continue to be streaking at the plate, and that is a powerful boost of confidence as we wind down the regular season and into the regional tournament.”

Britton took charge early in the opener, exploding for 10 first inning runs. Kaden Mills and Jack Teveldal both laced a pair of singles and knocked in two runs apiece. Mitchell Burger doubled, Drew Heitmann singled and had two RBI’s, and Carter Nelson, Colton Chapin, Kilker, and Chaz Vietor laced safeties.

In the nightcap the local nine gave Burger all the run support he needed with a pair of runs in the first and the defense played errorless ball in the field. Burger had six strikeouts in his no-hit fiveinning stint. Ben Suther doubled and Heitmann singled for Britton’s only hits.
