The Britton Public Library recently wrapped up their 2024 Summer Reading Program. The theme was “Adventure Begins at Your Library” and the many participants and volunteers most definitely had some great adventures throughout July.
According to Library Director Sonya Lang, a total of 76 kids signed up for Summer Reading this year. They read a total of 20,597 minutes or 343 hours and 28 minutes.
They started the program off with a Community Cookout on June 26. They served hotdogs, baked beans, chips and cookies. The kickoff event was attended by 57 individuals.
The reading program catered to three different age groups: Pre-K to Kindergarten, 1st to 3rd Grade, and 4th to 8th Grade. Each week, they had a new exciting adventure-related theme. The themes were- Safari Adventure, Camping Adventure, Kayak Adventure, and Fishing Adventure.
For the Kayak Adventure, the 4th to 8th graders were taken to the Britton Swimming Pool and shown how to safely enter a kayak. Once they could safely enter the kayak they were allowed to paddle around the pool. The younger kids were able to enter the kayak in the back room of the library and pose for a picture.
The last week of the program, the staff and many helpers took the kids to White Lake for the fishing adventure. 12 fourth through eighth graders attended their day and a whopping 38 younger kids went on the second day. Despite only one fish being caught throughout the two days, all involved had a lot of fun.
“Thank you to the Game Fish and Parks crew and the Marshall County Conservation Officer for assisting us,” said Lang.
Lang added that it was a great summer of youth involvement and library activities. She reminds adults that their summer reading program is going on now. They can log reading hours through the end of the month. And as always, watch the Library calendar for upcoming events.
