Editor’s Note: At the Journal, we have been lucky enough to enjoy some assistance from young people recently. In addition to another story from Livia Knecht in this week’s paper, we have acquired a new intern in recent weeks. Kya McLaen is joining us at the newspaper this semester as part of an internship class at Britton-Hecla. In addition to doing some writing for us, we hope Kya can learn about how a newspaper functions as she spends time at the office. This week, she introduces herself in her inaugural column.
My name is Kya McLaen and I am senior at Britton-Hecla High School. I was born and raised in the small town of Britton. I’ve always enjoyed how quiet the town is, but I would like to see what living in a bigger town would be like.
I would say that I am a generous and kind person. I often can be clumsy and weird at times, but I can always promise I will be entertaining.
Growing up with two younger sisters and an older brother has taught me a lot. I believe it has shaped me into the person I am today. I wouldn’t be here without them and I’m forever grateful to have grown up with them, even if I didn’t want to at times.
I participate in cheerleading for football and basketball as well as doing golf.
When I’m not at school or work I like to read fictional books, write stories, take naps with my cat, go to games, watch football with my parents, and spend time with my family and friends.
After I graduate from high school, I plan to attend Northern State University for a bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing. At some point during college, I’d like to study somewhere abroad for a few weeks. I’m very excited to start my life as an adult. I can’t wait to meet new people and experience new things. After college, I hope to have a job that allows me to travel the country.
Currently, I am interning at the Marshall County Journal for a High School Class. During this time, I hope to learn more about the world of English and how to become a better writer.
So far, I have enjoyed my time getting to know how things work and getting to know everybody. I look forward to spending the next semester with everyone.
