The Britton-Hecla volleyball team showed some grit in a sweep of Webster Area on Thursday that should serve it well in matches to come.
Coach Jenna Peters’ squad is off to a perfect 4-0 start after also sweeping Tri-State last week Tuesday. A busy week lies ahead with the Lady Braves traveling to Deuel on Thursday, playing in the Clark-Willow Lake Tournament on Saturday, and battling cross-country rival Langford Area in Langford on Monday.
That B-H grit showed up in the first set on Thursday when Peters’ crew faced a 22-15 deficit. But Sterling Brassfield came up with a block, Daynika Zuehlke served a pair of aces, and Abby Lee pounded a kill to knot the contest at 22-all. Webster Area was serving for set point with a 24-23 lead when Brassfield recorded a kill and served the final two points with Karlie Zuehlke getting the set-ending kill.
“I think our girls play really well together,” said Peters. “They have great chemistry and a never-give-up attitude. Going forward we have to continue to have great defense and be aggressive at the net. We also have really good servers so we will continue to have to be aggressive with serving to win tough games coming up. Webster was a key win for us though. They have always been a competitive team so beating them in three gives us the confidence we will need.”
Riding that comeback momentum the Lady Braves put together some key runs in the next two sets. With the second set tied 12-12 Heather Storbakken served eight straight points, four of them aces, for a 21-12 lead. McKenna Heer closed out the set with three of her nine kills in the match.
Abby Lee, who also had nine kills, asserted herself at the net in the final set. The junior had four kills and a pair of blocks and helped B-H put together another strong run. The set was tied at 8-8 before the Lady Braves reeled off 10 straight points, again behind Storbakken’s serving. She served nine stsraight this time, three of them aces, and Lee and Brassfield put the set and match away with kills.
