After opening its season with a win the Langford Area volleyball team endured a tough week, dropping four matches to fall to 1-4 on the year.
Coach Susan Larson’s squad dropped decisions to Hitchcock-Tulare 25-7, 25-17 and to Wilmot 25-22, 11-25, 25-22 in a tournament in Estelline on Saturday, lost to Northwestern 25-5, 25-11, 25-3 on Thursday, and lost a tight match to Leola-Frederick 25-22, 25-23, 25-20 last week Tuesday.
The Lady Lions played at Aberdeen Christian last night Tuesday, travel to Wessington for the Wolsey-Wessington Tournament on Saturday, host Britton-Hecla on Monday, and host North Central on Tuesday.

“Our first tournament loss was against a good Hitchcock-Tulare team,” said Larson.  “They caught us off guard in the first set, but we rallied back in the second set and played them tough. It was great to have Eliana Darling out on the floor for the first time this season. She was able to dabble in the game as she is still recovering from an ankle/foot accident late this summer.  It will be nice to have her back full time.”
Darling led the squad at the net, hitting 6-6 spike attempts and three kills.  Brynn Samson was 4-4 at the service line with a pair of aces.

Wilmot 25-22-25

“This is a game I think we’d all like back and we will have our chance against them again this season,” noted Larson.  “After losing the first set, we came back to win the second.  Thought we’d found our rhythm and we’d win the match, but we couldn’t hold onto it.  We will be working on serve receive at practice and trying to stay in system.”
Autumn Wegleitner was 11-11 in the serving department with four aces, while Emily Olson was 12-15 at the net with six kills and Wegleitner added 10-15 with 5 kills.

Northwestern 25-25-25
Langford Area 5-11-3
Perennial power Northwestern had its way with the lady Lions, allowing just 19 points in the match.

“This was a tough loss... two evenly matched teams and we played hard, we just couldn’t pull off a win,” said Larson.  “We were able to get a lead in the game but they fired back every time.  I’d like to see us hit more aggressively.  We’re a little tentative at the net but more varsity time will help us with this I believe.”
