After a tight opening set against Redfield the Britton-Hecla volleyball squad dominated the next two to earn the sweep 25-23, 25-14, 25-16 and boost its season mark to 9-2 on Thursday.
Coach Jenna Peters’ club hosted Waverly-South Shore last night Tuesday, travels to Florence to take on Florence-Henry on Thursday, competes in a tournament at Great Plains Lutheran in Watertown on Saturday, and hosts Sisseton on Tuesday.
“Redfield was a good win,” said Peters. “The girls played well together and our defense looked good. We still have things to work on as we have some tough games coming up, but I’m excited!”
The Lady Braves struggled from the service line in the opening set, giving up six points on missed serves, but strong net play allowed the local netters to stay close. Abby Lee, who ended up with 13 kills and three blocks, and Jaelee Grupe with 18-18 at the net and seven kills, led the attack. Sterling Brassfield, Karlie Zuehlke, and McKenna Heer also added kills in the set that was tied 10 times.
Lee had a block and Heer had a kill and block to help her team erase a 21-19 deficit and lead 24-21. Redfield cut that to 24-23 but Jaelee Grupe nearly went into the bleachers to save a ball in a long rally that gave B-H the win.
The second set was tied at 10-10 when Lee took charge. Her block and three straight kills led a 7-0 run and Redfield couldn’t get any closer than five points. Then in set three Heather Storbakken, who had seven aces in the match, led off the set with six straight points including three straight aces. Grupe and Lee both had back-to-back kills to help keep Redfield at bay and the Lady Braves completed the sweep.
