COURTHOUSE PROJECT UNDERWAY

COURTHOUSE PROJECT UNDERWAY
The official groundbreaking for the Marshall County Courthouse and Law Enforcement Center project was held last week. Several dignitaries manned the golden shovels for the event, including, left to right, Marshall County Commission Chairman Matt Schuller, Commissioners Jason Bender, Doug Medhaug, Leron Knebel, ISG Project Manager Kyle Fisel, Marshall County Auditor Megan Biel, and Jason Flack of Comstock Construction. Below is a rendering of the project.

On Wednesday, the community gathered with County officials, design firm ISG, and construction manager Comstock Construction for the official groundbreaking of the Marshall County Courthouse renovation and expansion project. This significant project will deliver a modernized, efficient, and accessible facility that balances community needs and historic preservation.
Nearly three years ago, ISG completed a comprehensive assessment of the historic Courthouse, identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and address structural needs while preserving the building’s historic integrity. The final assessment report and recommendations guided the County in making strategic decisions on how to best allocate resources and improve the Courthouse.
The resulting design achieves a balance between preservation, renovation, and expansion, ensuring that the Courthouse can meet current and future operational demands. Leading up to this month’s groundbreaking, detailed design work has steadily progressed since the 2023 bond referendum was approved.
The project will cost an estimated $9.6 million. County Auditor Megan Biel explained that the county will contribute approximately $4.6 million coming from reserve funds, grants and donations with the other $5 million coming from the voted upon bond.
The Courthouse renovations will make the building accessible for all users with improvements such as a new elevator, along with accessible restrooms, a jury box, and drinking fountains on each level.
Enhancements to thermal performance, including a new mechanical system and better insulation, will conserve energy, reduce operating costs, and improve occupant comfort. Interior updates will feature a remodeled Treasurer’s Office and refurbishments throughout the Courthouse, while tuckpointing on the exterior facade will ensure the building’s longevity.
The expanded Sherriff’s Department will feature more functional spaces and enhanced safety measures. A secure reception area, strengthened 911 Dispatch Center, and enhanced evidence storage will improve safety for visitors and employees. Dedicated spaces for the Deputies and offices, as well as a larger County Commission Room and two additional holding cells will improve overall building flow and support the operational needs of the Sherriff’s Department. The expansion will also ensure that all new spaces meet accessibility standards, providing greater access for everyone in the community.
Created through a collaborative process, ISG has developed designs and Comstock Construction is managing the construction. The Courthouse project represents a shared commitment to preserving Marshall County’s history while adapting for future needs. With progress advancing steadily, this transformation is on track to better serve the community for years to come.
During last Wednesday’s groundbreaking, Marshall County Commission Chairman Matt Schuller said, “This project has been a long time coming. We are preserving the old and looking forward to the new.”
