The Britton-Hecla oral interpretation team came home with the Eastern Coteau Conference Championship trophy for the first time ever, edging out Great Plains Lutheran by two points. Performers in three of the seven categories came home conference champs. Paisley Bray won the poetry division final round for the second year in a row and earned a Superior Plus in preliminary rounds. Oliver Moeckly and Jerod Nebrida also earned Superior Plus ratings and won the final round in the duet division. The reader’s theatre group comprised of Bray, Moeckly, Nebrida, Braydon Casey, and Carter Chapin ended up in a three-way tie for first place with its Superior ratings. Moeckly earned Superior Plus ratings for his oratory and made finals, placing third.
Also making the final round of competition was Casey, getting sixth in the humorous category, Bray and Chapin placing fourth in duo, Emily Effling placing fourth in serious, and Baylee Bender placing sixth in oratory. They all earned a Superior composite score in prelims, as did Chapin in storytelling, earning third place overall as there wasn’t a final round in that category.
There were several competitors who earned Superiors in preliminary rounds but didn’t qualify for finals. Amelia Ingvalson in poetry, and Wyatt Strong, Charles Schuller, and Lillian Boyko in humorous. Rounding out the team attending this meet were the following performers who earned Excellent Plus ratings: Aiden Strong and Ryer Larson with their duet, Savannah Angstman and Caitlyn Casey in the duet division and also the serious category, Ruthie Moeckly in poetry, Brooklyn Hunt in humorous, and Aiden with his serious.
The team is coached by Christina Bosse and Gretchen Christenson. The next couple of meets up for the team will be the Florence Invitational Saturday, Oct. 26 and the Northeastern Conference Meet in Webster Monday, Oct. 28. The local contest will be held Monday, Nov. 11 at the school.
In other interp action, Boyko, a seventh grader, earned fifth place in the humorous division at the Golden Eagle Invitational Oral Interpretation Meet Saturday at Aberdeen Central. The three preliminary rounds for Class AA, A, and B competitors were scored and then a final round for the top placers in each category determined the final awards.
Other students attending the Golden Eagle Meet were Aiden Strong, Charles Schuller, Lily Mundt, Wyatt Strong, Brooklyn Hunt, Addie Ahlgren, Ruthie Moeckly, and Carter Chapin.
