South Dakotans voted Tuesday for seven ballot measures, 105 state legislators, a couple of statewide offices and a U.S. president. Locally, voters chose two District 1 Representatives. The overall state and district results are as follows:
US President
Donald Trump defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Libertarian Chase Oliver to take South Dakota’s three electoral votes. Trump won with 63.4% of the state vote.
US House
Republican U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson won a fourth, two-year term by defeating Democratic challenger Sheryl Johnson (no relation). Dusty took 72% of the vote.
SD Public Utilities Commission
Republic Kristie Fiegen is on her way to another six-year term on the Public Utilities Commission, which regulates electric, natural gas and telephone utilities, issues permits for energy projects, pipelines and other projects and handles other duties. Her challengers were Libertarian A. Gideon Oaks and Democrat Forrest Wilson. Statewide, Feigen won 67.8% of the vote.
District 1 House of Representatives
Republicans Logan Manhart and Christoper Reder won the seats with 28% and 26% of the district-wide vote respectively. They defeated Democrats Steve McCleerey and Mark Sumption and Libertarians Josh Dennert and Tamara Lesnar.
Statewide Ballot Issues
Only one of the statewide ballot issues passed.
Amendment G: Abortion- FAILED with 58.6% voting no
Amendment H: Open primaries- FAILED with 65.6% voting no
Amendment F: Medicaid work requirements- PASSED with 56.1% voting yes
Amendment E: Gender neutral references for state officials- FAILED with 57.4% voting no
Initiated Measure 28: Grocery/consumables tax repeal- FAILED with 69.2% voting no
Initiated Measure 29: Recreational marijuana- FAILED with 55.5% voting no
Referred Law 21: Landowner bill of rights- FAILED with 59.4% voting no
