It was inevitable. Old Man Winter finally returned to Journal Country last week. While the previous week’s temperatures had even touched the 60 degree mark in some places, such balmy weather could not last.
A system in the middle of last week brought folks back to reality with more seasonal conditions. It started Monday with the rain. Well over an inch of rain fell in some places around Journal Country.
The rain eventually gave way to wintery mix and then snow. Webster recorded four inches of snow. Britton and Sisseton had one inch. The wind was the biggest problem with gusts of over 40 miles per hour recorded throughout the area Tuesday and Wednesday. In central South Dakota, gusts topped out in the 60s with Pierre recording 69 mph gusts. Winds in Summit peaked at 67 miles per hour Tuesday evening.
Both Britton-Hecla and Langford Area schools canceled classes on Wednesday. The state highway patrol implored motorists to use caution as they shared several photos of white out conditions especially on Highway 12 near Webster and Bristol. Summit too experienced dangerous road conditions.
Thursday brought milder temperatures, reduced wind and enough sunshine to melt some of the snow. Turkey week looks favorable as long as you are hoping for ice making conditions for fishing purposes.
