The South Dakota Farmers Union recognized Paul Dennert and Don Schaunaman (posthumously) with the Ag Ambassador award during its 109th State Convention in Huron, S.D., for their exceptional contributions to agriculture.

Paul Dennert: A Lifetime of Farming and Service
Paul Dennert, a fourth-generation farmer from Brown County, has dedicated his life to farming, community service, and advocacy. Raised on the family farm established by his great-grandfather in 1893, Dennert developed a passion for livestock as a child and maintained a registered Angus herd until passing the farm to his grandson in 2023.
Dennert and his wife, Peggy, raised two children and now enjoy time with their nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. “It does my heart good to know the farm will remain in the family name,” Dennert said.
Dennert also gave back to his community, serving more than 50 years in various roles at his church and local organizations. In 1992, he entered politics, serving 20 years in the South Dakota Legislature, where he championed agricultural tax reforms and cochlear implant coverage for children. His efforts ensured farmland taxes were based on productivity rather than market value.
Dennert credits his family for supporting his legislative career, especially his son Dana, who managed the farm during legislative sessions. Peggy often accompanied him to Pierre, and their grandchildren served as Legislative Pages. His legacy of public service continues, with his grandson Drew elected to the legislature in 2016.
Today, Dennert remains active in his church, enjoys traveling with Peggy, and cherishes time with his family, reflecting on a lifetime of contributions to agriculture and public service.

Don Schaunaman
Don Schaunaman, a third-generation farmer from Brown County, is remembered for his humility, integrity, and dedication. He passed away in 2021 at age 92, leaving a legacy of service and family values.
“He was humble and always willing to help,” said his sons, Craig and Kirk Schaunaman. “He believed in doing the right thing and leading by example.”
Growing up on a Depression-era farm near Westport, S.D., Don and eight of his 10 brothers carried on the family farming legacy. He farmed alongside his wife, Hazel, near Aberdeen, raising a family and supporting cooperative farming models.
Don retired in the 1990s, but his example inspired his children. Craig served as State Director for the Farm Service Agency, and Kirk continues to serve on cooperative boards.
“Farming was always a family deal for Dad,” Kirk said. Today, the tradition continues with their nephew Chad farming full-time alongside the family.
Don’s life reflects dedication to farming, community, and family, leaving a lasting impact on those who follow in his footsteps.
