While 2024 often felt dry and inconsistent, the year’s total precipitation exceeded the area’s annual average by a few inches. The year ended with 23.01 inches of moisture, surpassing the average of around 20 inches.
The year began with a notably dry January, recording only 0.08 inches of precipitation, a month that has historically at times seen no moisture at times. February followed suit with just 0.19 inches, well below the average of 0.54 inches.
March saw a slight improvement, logging 0.57 inches, though still below the monthly average of 0.77 inches. April brought 2.43 inches, about half an inch above the norm, hinting at wetter months ahead.
May and June continued the upward trend, with May accumulating 3.82 inches—more than an inch above its 2.69-inch average—and June delivering 4.27 inches, slightly above the 3.76-inch average. Notably, June 2005 still holds the record with 11.11 inches.
July was the wettest month of the year, with a substantial 6.24 inches of rain—over 5.5 inches more than July 2023 and well above the 3.02-inch average. However, the 1993 record of 10.83 inches remained untouched.
The dry spell returned in late summer and fall. August recorded 2.77 inches, just above average, but September and October brought only 0.22 and 0.35 inches, significantly below their respective averages of 2.03 and 1.48 inches.
November saw a rebound with 1.77 inches of moisture from late rains, ice, and snow, more than doubling the historical average of 0.68 inches. December closed the year on a drier note, with just 0.3 inches, falling short of the 0.49-inch average.
