Three wrestlers placed among the top six and Britton-Hecla placed 16th among 28 teams at the Central Cass Tournament held in Casselton, ND, Friday and Saturday.
Bryce Hawkinson improved his season mark to 17-2 on the way to a second place finish at 145 pounds. Ben Suther, now 18-7, finished third at 172 pounds, and Tucker Hardy placed sixth at 215 pounds and stands at 15-6 on the year.
“What we went for is what we saw at the tournament – good competition and two hard days of wrestling,” said B-H boss Josh Hawkinson. “Overall, I thought we wrestled pretty well and I think we represented our state and our school pretty well.”
Hawkinson was especially pleased with the efforts from his three placewinners.
“Bryce competed in a nearly full 32-man bracket, and I haven’t seen him wrestle that well since seventh or eighth grade,” said the Braves’ coach. “He has a different mentality wrestling and is fun to watch. Ben has that same kind of mindset and is getting to his offense more. He is realizing that he wins matches when he goes out looking to score points. Tucker bumped into some tough competition and saw some different styles in his weight class. Those matches gave us some good stuff to come back and work on.”
The local matmen had been scheduled to host a tournament on Friday but that event has been cancelled due to a lack of teams. The Braves will now have two weeks off before at the Kingsbury County Tournament in Arlington on Jan. 25.
