This year marked the 66th annual Black Hills Stock Show held in Rapid City. The two week event brings in thousands of people from not only South Dakota, but from all over the United States. Several vendors selling everything from farm machinery to dazzling western attire are set up throughout the two floors of The Monument building.
The Monument, which was rebranded in 2021 when the city built onto its current structure, boasts a brand new 10,000 seat arena. That arena hosts several concerts & events throughout the year however during the Stock Show, it’s a full blown rodeo arena. PRCA Rodeo events along with Xtreme Broncs and Bulls are all in the line up during the two week event.
Another yearly event hosted by the BHSS is the Youth Livestock Shows. Cattle take the first weekend while goats and sheep show the second weekend.
A pair of brothers from Marshall County traveled west for the cattle show this past weekend. Tru and Tuf Hagen, sons of Brandon and Calee Hagen, have attended the Youth Livestock Show in the Black Hills for four years now. “I look forward to the Stock Show every year, it’s a really fun vacation plus I get to do what I love,” says Tru.
This year was a record number of youth hauling their cattle to town. Over 300 showmen from eight different states signed up for their chance at a back drop winning score.
Youth put in a lot of work and time preparing their animal for two days of showing. Showmanship takes up day one, while day two is filled with breeding heifers and steers.
“Showmanship is probably my favorite day, I like presenting my animal. This year I made it into the final round, hopefully next year I can win a banner.” states Tuf Hagen The brothers show Hereford cattle, and Tuf also shows a Chianina steer.
“I can’t say enough good things about kids showing livestock. The amount of networking and new friends our boys have made is unbelievable, and we truly believe this will take them far in life.” said mom Calee.
The stock show runs for one more week with several events all week long. For more info on certain event times, check the website at www.themonument.live
