B-H BOARD APPROVES HIRES, ACCEPTS RESIGNATION

B-H BOARD APPROVES HIRES, ACCEPTS RESIGNATION

The Britton-Hecla Board of Education met Monday night, where they heard public comment on library materials, approved personnel actions, and received updates from Superintendent Steve Benson on technology and dual credit funding.
During the open forum, community member Jeanne Ahlgren addressed the board regarding Policy 6032, which outlines the selection and review of library media. Ahlgren echoed concerns she also shared in a letter to the editor published in this week’s Journal. She criticized what she described as delays in the review process for books available on the district’s eBook service, Sora, and urged the board not to renew the district’s contract with the platform.
In personnel matters, the board approved a working agreement with McKenzie Butler for her position as business office assistant. The resignation of band and music teacher Jakob Walden was also accepted, though he was immediately rehired as a long-term substitute for that position for the remainder of the school year. Walden is currently working toward completing the necessary certifications to become a fully licensed teacher within the district.
Superintendent Benson reported that the price of laptops the district intended to purchase may increase significantly due to tariffs. If the cost becomes prohibitive, the board may need to reassess the district’s one-to-one technology. Benson also noted that recent changes in state legislation have halved the funding for dual credit courses, meaning high school students will now be required to pay approximately $78 per course.
    In other business, the board:
— Approved offering contracts once negotiations are finalized.
— Approved the district’s health insurance plan, which will increase by 4%.
— Renewed its membership with the Associated School Boards of South Dakota.
— Renewed its membership with the South Dakota High School Activities Association.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for May 12.
