FATAL ACCIDENT EAST OF BRITTON TUESDAY

Multiple agencies responded to an accident eight miles east of Britton around 9:05 a.m. on Highway 10 Tuesday morning. According to Tony Mangan, spokesman for the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the accident involved two vehicles, a pickup and a car. The pickup was driving eastbound on Highway 10 when it entered the westbound lane and collided head-on with the car.

Mangan confirmed that the driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to an Aberdeen hospital.  The names of those involved were not released as of press time.

Mangan could not say if weather was a factor in the accident, though the conditions that morning were extremely blustery. After the accident, six miles of Highway 10 was closed for the next several hours as the scene was investigated. South Dakota Highway Patrol will continue to investigate the matter and this information is considered preliminary at this time.

Responding agencies included the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Marshall County Ambulance, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol. The North Marshall Fire Department also sent three units to the scene.

The Journal will update this story in the coming weeks as more information is released.
