Virgil passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead, MN, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 94.
Virgil Reinold Hoistad Sr. was born on February 11, 1929, to John and Mabel (Larson) Hoistad. He attended school in Havana, graduating in 1948. He was married to Donnetta Gulsvig daughter of Silas & Nora Jeanette (Trygstad) Gulsvig on December 21, 1952. In March 1953, he joined the Army and was deployed to Metz, France. After returning home from France, he moved to Anoka, MN, where he worked for Scott-Atwater and part-time at Sears, Caretaker for 4 apartment buildings, and attended welding classes, then moved back to the Hoistad farmstead in 1964 with the family.
Virgil farmed, drove the school bus, and later worked for the Sargent County Highway Department for 25 years; He took pride in working for the county, keeping the roads checked and maintained, and took pride in hearing positive comments that the roads were never in the same good conditions after his retirement. He was a member of the Nordland Lutheran Church. After retirement, he took up golfing and was lucky to receive a hole in on the Forman Golf Course. He enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles, card playing, woodworking, shooting pool, roller skating, ice skating, and water skiing. He enjoyed watching baseball. His favorite team was the MN Twins. He had the opportunity to take in the MN Twins game with his two sons and two grandsons.
Virgil loved to listen to country music. Virgil and Donnetta would always call their children to sing happy birthday to them, never seeming to miss a birthday. They both enjoyed yodeling.
Virgil is survived by his seven children, Dorreen (Alan) Olstad, Virgil Jr. (Cynthia) Hoistad, Denise (Bill) Huckell, Karen (Jason) Medhaug, Kristine (Mike) Harris, Janelle (Curt) Hansen & Joel (Sandy) Hoistad., 13 grandchildren Curtis (Michele) Olstad, Patrick (Mandy) Olstad, Jeffrey (Callen) Hoistad, Sarah (Steven) Mongeon, Holly (Austin) Taylor, Jared (Natasha) Huckell, Ryan Medhaug, Mason (fiancé Darrien) Harris, Keelan Harris, Derek (Nicole) Hansen, Adam Hansen, Braxten Hoistad, ArieOnna Hoistad, 15 greatgrandchildren, as well as two sisters Jean Haugtvedt, Marlene (Bob) Maeser and sister-in-laws Ethel Hoistad and Lois Hoistad, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Virgil was preceded in death by his wife Donnetta, parents, in-laws, and nine siblings.
