Johnny Baker, Sr. was born December 25, 1935, to Richard and Nellie (Severson) Baker in Newark, SD. He was the fourth of six children. He lived in Marshall County most of his life. Johnny went to Newark County School up until the 6th grade and went to work driving gravel truck after that.
On March 31, 1954, Johnny married Norma Jean Yelkin in Britton, SD. They raised nine children together. They made their home in Kidder and the surrounding area until they moved to Britton in 2011.
He started roofing elevators for the company Peavey. He worked on elevators for about 8 years before starting his life of farming with the Jarrett family. John worked for them until they got out of the farming business. He took a year off for “retirement” before starting work at the Marshall County highway department for about the next 10 years. Then he “retired” again and went back to the farming life working for Doug Henley. He finally fully retired when he reached the young age of 80.
When he wasn’t working, you could find him out in the garage fixing and tinkering on anything that he could. He also loved spending time with his grandkids and always had candy in his drawer for them.
He passed away Monday, May 1, 2023 at Avera St. Luke’s in Aberdeen at the age of 87.
Johnny is survived by his wife of 69 years Norma Jean, his children, Lorrie Horn (Dan Baus), Sherry (Gary) Siers, Jerry Baker, Carrie (Bob) Walker, Johnny (Charlene) Baker Jr, Jennifer (Don) Hanford, Stacy (Ty) Smith, Billie Jo Simons (Derick Huisenga) and Stephanie (Warren) Symens; 23 grandchildren; 20 greatgrandchildren; and 1 greatgreat grandchild on the way.
