The Britton-Hecla track squad tuned up for the Region 1B meet set for Britton beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday with a pair of conference meets last week.
Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad competed in the Eastern Coteau Conference meet in Webster last week Tuesday and traveled to Groton for the Northeast Conference meet on Thursday.
Britton-Hecla finished second in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the ECC event behind Great Plains Lutheran. The boys were eighth and the girls ninth in the NEC meet.
The top 24 athletes and relay teams in each event will advance to the state meet in Sioux Falls May 25-27. Heading into the regional meet Britton-Hecla has two boys and two girls in the top 24 in individual events and a pair of boys relay teams among the top 24.
Dashel Davidson stands 20th in the 100-meter dash with an 11.56 clocking, and Daniel Person is ranked 21st in the 800 run with a 2:08.39 effort. Sterling Mertens is eighth in the long jump at 165.5 and Abby Lee 11th in triple jump with a leap of 31-9. Lee is also just a quarter of an inch out of the 24th spot in long jump with a 15-3.75 leap. The girls 3200 relay is ranked 27th and the 1600 quartet 29th.
The boys 3200-meter relay rates 20th with a time of 9:04.08. Team members include Wyatt Tosse, Gage Storley, Jaxon Zuehlke, and Person. The 1600 relay quarter of Bryce Hawkinson, Ben Suther, Tucker Mertens, and Person ranks 21st.
Mertens is on the bubble in high jump, tied with 10 other jumpers at 5-6 for the 23rd spot B-H athletes brought home eight first place finishes from the ECC meet, led by Daniel Person with three titles. He took the 800-meter run, teamed up with Bryce Hawkinson, Ben Suther, and Tucker Mertens to win the 1600-meter relay, and was the anchor on the 3200-meter relay with Wyatt Tosse, Gage Storley, and Jaxon Zuehlke.
Tucker Mertens added a title in the 300 hurdles, and Dashel Davidson, Collin Beaner, Will Richter, and Zuehlke were members of the winning medley relay quartet.
On the girls’ side Sterling Mertens won the long jump, Abby Lee took the triple jump, and Lee teamed up with Jiana Davidson, Emma Kraft, and Ava Teveldal to claim the 3200-meter relay title.
Top performers for B-H in the NEC meet were Mertens with a second place finish in the long jump and Dashel Davidson was third in the 100meter dash.
