Randall Edward Janisch, fondly known as Randy, passed away peacefully at his home in Lebanon, Illinois, on June 11, 2024, at the age of 57 after a lengthy illness.

Graveside service for Randy Janisch will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 3, 2024 at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lake City, SD with military honors. Following the graveside service there will be a gathering at Club Eden in Eden, SD.

Randy was born on March 2, 1967, in Sisseton, South Dakota, to Richard M. and Delores A. (Heilman) Janisch. As the youngest of eight children, he grew up on the family farm in Lake City, South Dakota. Randy was confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden, South Dakota, and attended school in the Roslyn School District. During his high school years, he was active in football, track, and the Future Farmers of America (FFA), graduating from Roslyn High School in 1985.

Following high school, Randy worked as a farmhand alongside his brother Bob for a rancher in Miller. He later joined his brother Allen in Sioux Falls, working at the John Morrell Meat Packing Plant. After a strike at the plant in 1985, Randy took on various roles, including working as a farmhand for Ralph Keinz in Eden and driving a cheese truck for the Veblen Cheese Factory in Veblen, South Dakota.

Randy enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on March 7, 1988, undergoing training at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego. His service included assignments at Camp Pendleton in California, Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, Marine Corps Reserve Company F in Salt Lake City, and the Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina. At New River, he served as a command career counselor. While planning a transition within the Marine Corps from career retention to financial advising, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from North Carolina State University. Later, he was stationed at Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan, from 2005 to 2008. His distinguished military career earned him numerous awards, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. After retiring from the Marine Corps as a Gunnery Sergeant in 2008, Randy pursued further education, obtaining a Master’s degree in finance from McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. He then worked for 12 years as a budget analyst in civil service for the Department of Defense at Scott Air Force Base. In 2017, he spent a year in Afghanistan as a contractor.

Randy’s personal life was marked by two marriages. He first married Julie Nelson, with whom he had two sons, Jared and Jacob. He later married Barbara Sullivan in Utah. Together, they lived in various locations during his military career, ultimately settling in Highland, Illinois, upon his retirement. Randy and Barbara have three children: Randi Lynn, Luke, and Jenna. Randy was passionate about fitness, enjoying weightlifting, bodybuilding, Tough Mudder competitions, and running marathons. He took great pride in maintaining his lawn with his Kubota tractor and relished growing vegetables, particularly potatoes and corn.

Randy is survived by his children: Jacob (Brittney) Janisch, Jared Janisch, Randi Lynn Janisch (Zeke Wright), Luke (Natalee) Janisch, and Jenna; his stepson A.J. (Veronica) Brumitt; and his grandchildren: Vivica Rose Brumitt, Carter Edward Weinland, Iyla Lynn Wright, and Esme Janisch. He is also survived by his siblings: Richard (Cindy) Janisch, Jerome Janisch, Julie Janisch, Gregory (Kristin) Janisch, Paul (Julie) Janisch, Robert (Brenda) Janisch, and Allen (Angie) Janisch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Delores Janisch. Randy’s life was a testament to dedication, service, and love for his family. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
