Trevor Kurt Zuehlke was born on August 15, 2002 at Aberdeen, SD to Kurt Lyn and Nicole Marie (Heitmann) Zuehlke. He grew up outside of Britton and loved being outdoors and on the farm since he arrived there. He was baptized in 2002 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Britton, and confirmed in 2017 at First Lutheran Church in Britton. Trevor attended school in Britton, graduating in 2021 and continued his education and rehabilitation there until May 2024.

Trevor loved nature, animals, and being active. He always begged to fish, hunt, or drive the tractor. For his birthday every year, he would get a pair of football gloves and the new version of the Madden Football video game. Spending time helping on the farm, playing sports, snowmobiling and wakeboarding at the lake brought him joy growing up. As he got older, Trevor enjoyed volunteering time to various activities like youth sports, activities, and cooking breakfast at assisted living. Trevor had a way of making others feel seen and valued. He had an old soul, and could talk with people of any age, especially about farming, hunting, and football.

Trevor was a champion in many ways. He was a part of the State Championship Football team in 2017, was the team captain in both football and basketball teams his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He was not afraid of hard work, and was a leader in the weight room and classroom. Trevor was an A honor roll student, active in student council, and JAWS Youth Group. He made many friends along the way.

After Trevor’s tragic injury, Trevor relied on caregivers to help him in every way, and he was sure lucky to find some good ones. Trevor’s caregiving team went through a lot with him. Going for walks and drives gave him joy, and we are sure he must have enjoyed listening to his caregivers singing to him. He spent a lot time checking fields, cows, hunting spots, and keeping up with his sisters. Trevor especially enjoyed snuggles and kisses from his little siblings, Berkley and Collin. Trevor has inspired many people and continues to change numerous lives during his journey following his injury. Trevor’s legacy will carry on for all those he impacted over the years through faith, family and friendship.

Trevor passed away Thursday, August 8, 2024 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 21.

Grateful for having shared his life are his parents, Nicole and TJ Stiegelmeier, Kurt and Shana Zuehlke; sisters, McKaelyn, Karlie and Berkley; brother, Collin; and step-siblings, Mason, Carson, Lincoln, and Eliana Hefty, and a very special friend, Averie Johnson; grandparents, Marlin (Julie) Heitmann and Karen Zuehlke; stepgrandparents: Roger (Laurie) Stiegelmeier and Terry (Judy) Lusk; and many aunts, uncles and numerous cousins.
