SHEILA DURLAND
SHEILA DURLAND

Sheila Hayes, daughter of William and Rose (Werdel) Hayes was born November 24, 1928, in Mitchell, South Dakota. She graduated from Miller High School and later earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from SDSU. She was united in marriage to Richard Durland on July 31, 1951, in Brookings, South Dakota. Sheila was a lifelong teacher, a career that started as she pioneered an inhome kindergarten class which she later moved to the school when that became a standard class offering. The majority of her nearly 40-year teaching career was spread between Langford and Britton where she taught Home Economics.
Sheila’s passion was her family but she also loved to sew, travel, dance and make cookies! She was a wicked card player to very end. If she could she would have celebrated Christmas every day and decorated every room in red. Her favorite place in the world was her lake home on Clear Lake near Britton.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Steve (Linda) Durland of Saxapahaw, NC, Nancy (Fred) Tregaskes of Phoenix, AZ, Lori (Kevin) Manske of Shakopee, MN, Patty (Brian) Bassett of Hastings, NE, and Tom (Deb) Durland of Sioux Falls; 9 grandchildren: Katie, Kelly, Hayley, Adam, Creighton, Elliot, Chase, Gabe and Brent. 14 great grandchildren; special friends Brenda and Ken Spence, and extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, second husband Lester Fitting, parents, William and Rose; sisters, Kay Golden and Mary Ellen Maloney; and grandson, Jeff Tregaskes.
