Walking into Sunset Greenhouse at the Sunset Hutterite Colony west of Britton is like walking into a sea of colors. The greenhouse, which opened last week, has hundreds of plants and produce. There are flowers, herbs, succulents, potting soil and more, plus a healthy variety of vegetables for the garden. The business is open Monday through Saturday and is located on the north side of Sunset Colony at 41632 109th St, Britton.

Business is Blooming at Sunset Greenhouse

Petunias, Perennials, and Pumpkins, OH MY! The aisles at Sunset Greenhouse are burgeoning with these items and hundreds of others. The greenhouse at Sunset Hutterite Colony west of Britton opened last week and shoppers now can stock up for their gardens and flowerbeds.

The chief green thumb behind Sunset Greenhouse is Aaron Waldner. After consulting some other seasoned greenhouse workers, he determined that the colony-run business has been open since about 2006. It is just one of several businesses operated by the people at Sunset. They also make Duralite trailers, operate a hog farm and meat market and have carpentry and mechan-ic businesses. And after the greenhouse season wraps up, their Farmers Market gets in full swing.

Waldner explains that the genesis of Sunset Greenhouse came a couple of decades ago when the people out there decided to capitalize on their garden-ing skills. “We always had our own big garden,” said Waldner. Thus, moving into a retail situation with their flowers and produce seemed natural.

The colony would purchase their first greenhouse and then go on to build their own additional ones as the business expanded through the years.
