Lady Braves Pick Up Win Over Waverly-South Shore

The Britton-Hecla girls basketball team rolled to a big 55-17 win over Waverly-South Shore on Saturday for its fourth victory of the season this past week.

The Lady Braves also dropped decisions to Deuel 46-42 on Monday and 45-26 to Warner on Friday. Coach Terry Nelson’s squad took a 4-8 record into a contest with Leola-Frederick last night Tuesday.

This week the local cagers host Wyndmere-Lidgerwood on Saturday (JV 1 p.m., varsity to follow), and play a twin bill with the boys’ squad in Sisseton on Tuesday.

“Our slow starts have been a killer,” noted B-H coach Terry Nelson. “We have to keep working on what we’re doing – shooting the shots and on passing – and turnovers have been a big thing for us.”

Britton-Hecla 55 Waverly-SS 17

Britton-Hecla turned in a dominant performance on the way to its fourth win of the season.

Nelson’s crew applied a stifling fullcourt press that forced numerous Waverly-South Shore turnovers that the Lady Braves turned into points. BH jumped out to a 17-1 lead in the first four and a half minutes behind three buckets from Tiyanna Schott, and two each from Sterling Brassfield and Jayden Bender. The local cagers led 19-3 at the quarter break and virtually put the game away very early by rattling off 10 straight points in the first two minutes of the second quarter to lead 29-3. Britton-Hecla stretched that to 41-9 at halftime and cruised to victory.

Schott led a balanced BH attack with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Bender added 11 counters and five assists, Brassfield had 10 points, seven assists, and five steals, and Alyssa James pulled down 16 boards.

Deuel 46 Britton-Hecla 42

Britton-Hecla battled Deuel down the stretch but came up four points short.

Tiyanna Schott had 13 points and 11 rebounds, Sterling Brassfield added 10 counters, Alyssa James pulled down nine boards, and Jayden Bender added five assists and three steals.

Warner 45 Britton-Hecla 26

Warner blanked Britton-Hecla in the opening period and the Lady Braves were never able to dig out of that hole.

Eight players scored with RaeAnn Hagenson leading the way with five.
