Braves Get Victory

The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team picked up its second win of the season, stopping Sisseton 39-33 last week Tuesday.

The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team picked up its second win of the season, stopping Sisseton 39-33 last week Tuesday.

Coach Troy Knecht’s club dropped a 51-22 decision to Webster Area on Monday and stands at 2-14 for the season. This week the Braves host Clark-Willow Lake on Thursday in a doubleheader with the girls squad (C games 4 p.m., JV games 5 p.m., varsity girls, varsity boys to follow), travel to Rosholt to take on Tri-State in a twin bill on Friday, and Tuesday Hamlin comes to town for two (JV games 5 p.m., varsity girls, varsity boys to follow).

The local cagers have some tough contests to finish the regular season.

“The final stretch for us is going to be difficult,” noted Knecht. “We have Clark-Willow Lake, Tri-State, Hamlin and Groton left. Other than Tri-State these teams are all top 10 Class A programs. Winning isn’t necessarily the objective for us against teams like that. It’s finding out if we can challenge them and accomplishing tangible goals that we set for the game. We are taking our lumps, but I still think the program is headed in the right direction.”

Britton-Hecla 39 Sisseton 33

Britton-Hecla jumped out to a 15-4 first quarter lead and held on to down Sissseton.

“We had a great first half,” sdaid KInecht. “Not as good defensively as I would’ve liked, but we scored 29 and were ahead, so I’ll take it. In the second half we really shut down offensively and quit attacking. It seemed like we tried not to lose rather than win. Fortunately we did what we had to do defensively and held on against a team that we should beat.”

BoDell Davidson led the Braves with 11 points.

Webster Area 51 Britton-Hecla 22

The Braves were in the game at halftime, trailing bu just five, but Webster Area went on a 23-7 third period run to take control.

“This was probably the most underwhelming performance I’ve seen out of one of our teams since I started here,” said Knecht. “Again, defensively we did enough but offensively nobody attacked. We didn’t have a guy confident enough to make things happen. It was disappointing as a coach to have that happen against a team we should compete with. The kids were disappointed as well and I’m sure we will find a way to get better next time out. We aren’t a great team but we are much better than our last six quarters.”

Dawson Treeby led B-H scorers with 10 points.
