The Britton-Hecla track squad was able to get in a couple of meets in the past week at Groton last week Tuesday and Sisseton on Thursday before scheduled dates at Webster on Friday and Milbank on Tuesday were cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
This week Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad will compete in Sisseton on Friday and also travel to Sioux Falls for the Dakota Relays Friday and Saturday before hosting the Eastern Coteau Conference meet on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
Two relay squads brought home first place medals from the Sisseton meet. The boys 1600 quartet of Ben Suther, Bryce Hawkinson, Jaxon Zuehlke, and Daniel Person was clocked in 3:51.04 to take that event, while the girls 3200 team of Daynika Zuehlke, Jeris Stark, Jayden Bender, and Ava Teveldal had a winning time of 11:11.62.
“We have a lot of athletes that are stepping up and running events that they have not run in the past,” said Symens. “They are excited to try something new and have been working hard to achieve new goals. We still have several boys and girls relay teams in the top 24, and that’s exactly where we want to be so we can take as many kids to state as possible.”
The top 24 performers in each event will advance to the state meet. Regional meets are no longer held. Britton-Hecla currently ranks among the top 24 in the state in seven boys events and two girls events.
Daniel Person stands 12th in the 1600 run (4:52.20), 14th in the 3200 run (11:00.59), and 17th in the 800 run (2:10.64), while Dashel Davidson is in the 23rd spot in the 100 dash (11.77), just .01 of a second ahead of the 25th best time held by Langford Area’s Skylar Godel.
Three boys relays are currently among the 24 best. The 1600 quartet ranks 11th (3:43.71), the medley squad is 13th (3:58.15), and the 3200 unit 14th (9:14.02). The 800 team currently ranks 30th.
Two girls relays rank among the top 24 to date. The 3200 team stands 17th (11:11.62), and the medley relay ranks 21st (4:53.33). The 1600 foursome stands at 28th, less than a second out of the top 24. Jaelee Grupe also stands in the 28th spot in high jump (4-6), and Taryn Kraft is 25th in triple jump (30-2).
