Many Area Memorial Day Events Planned

Area communities will hold special remembrances for deceased veterans on Monday in recognition of Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember those who have fought for our everyday freedoms and are no longer with us.  Special remembrance is brought for those who have died in the line of duty.
Area residents and businesses are asked to fly flags at half mast until noon on Monday in honor of those who have served and died. This unique custom honors the war dead for the morning and living veterans for the rest of the day.
At 9:45 on Monday, the new Veterans Memorial will be dedicated at the Britton Cemetery. There will be a short program. Attendees should gather by the memorial on the west side of the cemetery.
After the dedication, Britton American Legion Post 80 will honor fallen soldiers and veterans with their regular service at the cemetery at 10 a.m.  A small program will be held including a poem, followed by prayer, and the appropriate 21-gun salute and taps.  All are invited to attend and pay proper respect to those who have given their time and service for our freedoms.  A memorial listing all fallen soldiers and veterans who are buried at the Britton Cemetery will be posted one week prior to Memorial Day and one week following.
The Britton Legion will move on to the Lake City Catholic Cemetery for an 11:30 service there.
A program is planned at the Langford Legion Hall at 10 a.m. Rolls and coffee will be served before he the program.  Veterans will be honored at the Hillside Cemetery immediately following the program.
There will be a program in Pierpont in the Stone Building (Ponts Pub) at 11:00 a.m. with dinner to follow.
In the Veblen/Kidder area, a 10:15 graveside service is planned at Trondhjem Cemetery. The Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church near Kidder will have graveside rites at 11 a.m. with a program and free will dinner to follow, and the public is welcome.
Zion Lutheran Church in rural Hillhead will hold their annual Memorial Day Celebration and fundraiser with military rites at 11:30, dinner and program to follow.
A Memorial Day Program at the Hecla Community Center will start at 10 a.m.  A cemetery tribute service will follow the program at the Hecla Cemetery, and a freewill lunch will be served at the Community Center following the cemetery service.
The Legion Post #76 Color Guard from Veblen will present a prayer, a 21-gun salute, and Taps at four cemeteries beginning at the Palestine Church at 10 a.m.  The Color Guard will be at the Veblen Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., the Catholic Cemetery south of Veblen at 11 a.m., and the Zion Lutheran Church at 11:30 a.m. with a lunch to follow.
