The Britton-Hecla gymnastics squad opened its season with a dual win over Sisseton last week Tuesday and then jumped into the fire against five Class AA teams at the Hub City Invitational in Aberdeen on Saturday.
This week Coach Angela Grupe’s club hosted a meet last night Tuesday and travels to Milbank on Saturday. The Lady Braves will also host a triangular with Aberdeen Central JV and Sisseton during the Christmas break on Monday, Dec. 30.
“We had a good first week of competition,” said Grupe. “We are excited to be starting where we are because we know we still have lots of things in the works. Also, we are hoping to have all-around gymnasts Kennady Van Lith back from an ankle injury in January to help our team score as we know the Northeast Conference will continue to be tough.”
Grupe has been pleased with the progress she has seen from her team.
“I am pleased with the growth I’ve seen so far and some girls stepping in to fill some roles and push themselves. I look forward to another tough but good season of competition. We will need to increase our vault difficulty and clean up our execution on the other three events. So far beam has been very good, only counting two falls total in the first two meets.”
Abby Lee has led the Lady Braves in the two opening meets with the top all-around scores of 32.00 and 32.55. Ava Teveldal was the only event winner, taking top honors in balance beam in the Sisseton dual. Marley Sundin was also an individual winner in the junior varsity vault competition against Sisseton.
