The Britton-Hecla wrestling squad had a full week with a triangular at Redfield last week Tuesday and a tournament in Faulkton on Saturday.
Clark-Willow Lake posted a 61-12 dual win over the Braves at Redfield and the host team downed the local matmen 53-16. In the 16-team Saturday tourney Bryce Hawkinson at 150 and Tucker Hardy at 215 both placed second, while Jarrik Jones was fifth at 98 pounds. The Braves finished eighth as a team.
Hawkinson, ranked fifth in the state at 150, battled the second-ranked grappler in the finals. He also posted a 1-0 win over a state placewinner in North Dakota in the semifinals. Hardy dominated his first three matches, scoring three pins in a total of 3:14 before falling in the final match. After being pinned in his first two matches Jones battled back to post a 26-second pin to claim the fifth place spot.
This week Coach Josh Hawkinson’s squad will wrap up its pre-Christmas schedule by competing in the Northeast Conference Tournament in Groton on Thursday and then has a break until a Jan. 4 tournament at Webster.
“Overall, I think the kids are taking things away from these matches that we can learn from,” said Hawkinson. “We also get to see some tough competition in the Faulkton Tournament, and it’s nice to see some of those guys early in the season.”
Hawkinson hopes that the first two weeks of matches will help prepare his squad for the NEC meet on Thursday.
“I would like to see us show up and wrestle up to the ability I know we can in the conference meet,” said the B-H boss. “After that we will let the kids enjoy Christmas and then hopefully come back and be ready to wrestle at Webster.”
