There was a lid on the basket for the Britton-Hecla girls basketball team at Webster on Friday as Terry Nelson’s crew dropped a 50-29 decision.
The loss dropped the Lady Braves to 1-2 for the season heading into a matchup with Florence-Henry at Florence on Monday.
Webster Area led just 10-7 after one period but then outscored the local cagers 12-2 in the second stanza. The Lady Braves righted the ship in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts 14-13, to stay in the game but then were outscored 15-6 in the final period.
“We had the shots but just didn’t make too many of them,” said Nelson, whose team shot just 27% from the field and 6-18 at the charity stripe. “Everybody took good shots but we were rushing them. We finally got aggressive in the third period and I thought we were on a roll, getting the game down to eight points, but then all of a sudden the roof fell in.”
Nelson said his club will face a quick, pressing ballclub at Florence-Henry.
“We have to get the ball in and look to pass instead of dribble against their press and go to meet the ball,” stressed the B-H boss. “And we have to shoot the ball better and rebound.”
Maddi Micko led the Lady Braves with eight points and Heather Storbakken and Daynika Zuehlke netted six apiece. Chellon Pruitt pulled down eight rebounds and Daynika Zuehlke grabbed seven.
