The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team wrapped up its pre-Christmas schedule with a perfect 2-0 record after downing Webster Area 56-46 on Friday.
The Braves were forced to postpone a scheduled contest with Northwestern last week Monday due to illness, but Coach Troy Knecht’s crew was back at full strength on Friday with Jaxon Zuehlke and Chaz Vietor returning after missing the season opener.
“For whatever reason I feel like for the last three years we’ve laid an egg against Webster, so coming out and competing was a point of emphasis,” said Knecht. “The boys didn’t disappoint. Although we’ve been fighting some sickness they made no excuses and were ready to go.
“It was nice to have Jaxon and Chaz back to help solidify the rebounding. We are still giving up a few more than I’d like but there were a lot three-point shots attempted and they tend to come off long,” added Knecht. “We turned the ball over too much and need to get our turnovers down to 10 or 12. We want to play fast but possessions matter, and we need to hold on to a few more.”
Knecht liked what he saw on the offensive end of the floor.
“We did some nice things offensively at times and I think as we continue to grow we will keep improving on that end. We had a chance to put them away in the third quarter but we took our foot off the gas and let them hang around. That’s just a matter of learning how to win. These guys haven’t been ahead in the second half very often in their careers. It’s going to be fun to take them on this ride.”
The Braves are back in action on Friday, Jan. 3, in a twin bill with the girls against Deuel at Cleare Lake.
