BRAVES WIN CROSS-COUNTY TUSSLES

Girls Survive Lady Lions’ Rally
BRAVES WIN CROSS-COUNTY TUSSLES
Lizzie Gustafson, left, and Eliana Darling, right, put the crunch on Britton-Hecla’s Chellon Pruitt when the two cross-county rivals met on Friday in Langford.

Britton-Hecla’s girls basketball team picked up a win over cross-county rival Langford Area 50-45 on Friday but fell to Sisseton 67-28 last week Tuesday.
Coach Terry Nelson’s crew, now 4-11, hosted Clark-Willow Lake last night Tuesday, plays Waubay-Summit at Summit on Thursday in a game rescheduled from Jan. 20, hosts Waverly-South Shore on Monday and hosts Hamlin on Tuesday.  The Lady Braves wrap up their regular season schedule when Groton comes to town on Friday, Feb. 21.  All the remaining games are doubleheaders with the boys’ team.

Britton-Hecla grabbed an eight-point halftime lead and then had to weather a late Langford Area rally to post the win.
The Lady Braves scored the last four points of the opening period to lead 10-5 and went on an 8-3 run over the final four minutes of the half to hold a 23-15 halftime advantage.  Mallory Grupe fueled that run with a pair of fielders and a free toss.
B-H boosted that margin to 32-19 when Heather Storbakken canned a trey and Grupe and Daynika Zuehlke hit hoops but LA cut that to 38-29 at the break as Alex Darling hit eight points in a two-minute stretch including a trey at the buzzer.
The Lady Braves looked to be in charge when Storbakken opened the final stanza with a three-pointer, but LA hung around.  Eliana Darling netted three fielders, Alex Darling hit a couple, and Paytyn Marlow converted a three-point play to cut the margin to 47-42 with 2:03 left.  Another Marlow three-point play made it 49-45 with 42 seconds remaining but the Lady Lions didn’t score again.
“We played some pretty good defense but gave them some shots at the last,” noted Nelson.  “Our passing has to get better as we head down the home stretch of the seson and we have to make the shots underneath the basket.”
Storbakken had 14 points and Maddi Micko added 12.  Grupe pulled down 11 rebounds, Chellon Pruitt grabbed nine, and Micko seven.  Karli Zuehlke had four assists and four steals. Alex Darling laced 20 for LA and Marlow had 10.
