Tough Road For Braves

Play At Langford Tuesday

The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team ran into some tough sledding in the past week, dropping three contests, and is still looking for its first win this season.

Coach Troy Knecht’s crew played at Wilmot last night Tuesday. Thursday Florence-Henry comes to town, Monday the Braves play at Waubay-Summit, and Tuesday B-H meets crosscounty rival Langford Area in Langford.

Redfield 49 Britton-Hecla 26

The Braves were hanging in there through the first quarter, trailing just 13-11, but the deficit grew in the second quarter when the local boys came up with just four points, and trailed 2615.

In the third quarter, the Braves added nine more but the Pheasants racked up 16 to lead 42-24, anfd B-H added just a single bucket in the final period.

“We executed really well defensively and despite shooting 16% in the first half we were still in the game,” said Knecht. “Unfortunately the shots wouldn’t go in and scoring is the name of the game.”

Will Schuller was the leading scorer with seven.

Northwestern 73 Britton-Hecla 42

The Braves dropped another tough one against Northwestern on Friday.

The home Braves got behind after the first quareter 1810 and the deficit grew to 3719 at the half. by half, 19-37. B-H outscored the Wildcats to cut the margin to 14 after three quarters but Northwestern exploded for 24 fourth quarter points.

“Northwestern isn’t really any more talented than we are, but they are bigger at every position,” Knecht noted. “They play hard and are physical. We matched their intensity to a point but ended up putting them on the free throw line 34 times. We only got to the stripe four times and that’s usually a recipe for disaster.”

Ty Fagerland and Dawson Treeby both came off the bench for eight points. Will Schuller added seven and BoDell Davidson six.

Milbank Area 68 Britton-Hecla 33

The Braves completed a long busy week with a makeup game against Milbank Area on Monday night.

The visiting Bulldogs jumped out to a big lead with 24 points in the first quarter to the Braves’s nine. The pressure continued heading into halftime, seeing the Braves behind 42-14. MA added 18 more points to the Braves’s 12 in the third to put the game away.

“Again, a team I think we can match intensity-wise but when the ball isn’t going in its hard to remain competitive,” Knecht said. “We’ve got time yet this season and I think the shots will eventually go. When they do things will feel a lot better. The boys are playing hard and that’s one of the controllables I would expect out them.”

Gage Storley led B-H with eight points and BoDell Davidson and Ty Fagerland each added six.
