PAUL HOLLAND

PAUL HOLLAND

Paul Michael Holland, age 72, passed away at his farm in rural Veblen, SD. The farm was always one of his favorite places to be. A Celebration of Paul’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15th, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Veblen, South Dakota. Visitation will be one hour prior to service beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Paul was blessed with wonderful parents Bernard and Evean (Johnson) Holland. He grew up on the family farm with one sister, Julie. He was given the gifts of working hard and knowing the Lord. Farming came at a young age and lasted throughout his lifetime. Paul planted and tended to many crops and planted thousands of beautiful trees. Paul graduated from Veblen High School and studied at North Dakota State College of Science majoring in plumbing and business management. Paul was a master builder and was part of many local projects including the planning and construction of new apartment complexes and churches, lake homes, pig barns, many family homes, garages, additions, remodels, decks, patios, sheds and shops, roofs, docks and fences. He even put in the new windows on the funeral home in Lidgerwood. He was very skilled at building design and efficiency. Paul will always be valued for the extraordinary provider he was for his family.

Paul and Maureen (Schlekeway) were married at rural Palestine Church on October 16, 1971. They had a true partnership together as they raised five children whom they poured every bit of time, love, energy, and care into. It was an important goal to help all of his children get their college degrees. Paul was proud to have three NDSU graduates, one MSUM graduate and one UND graduate. Although Paul was no stranger to long days and hard work, he found time to do the fun things as well with his family. Family activities were too many to list but included golf, lake trips, skiing, motorcycling, snowmobiling, basketball, baseball, football, swimming, clay pigeon shooting, cards and cribbage, raising chickens, finding that baby bunny in the field, and spending time together. Cherished memories will always be birthday celebrations and those pontoon rides with some of the favorite songs on repeat. Paul was very proud of his children and grandchildren.

Paul was very involved with his community as well. He and Maureen were the janitors for Our Savior’s church for over 13 years as well as keeping countless cemetery properties beautiful. Paul managed many apartments and helped renters for decades. He was a school board member and was involved in other clubs and community activities.

Paul is survived by his wife Maureen of almost 53 years and their children: Justin (Holly) Holland and children Nevaeh, Aniah and Charlee of Baden, PA; Kristi (Dave) Noel and children Hannah, Teegan, and Jonah of Fosston, MN; Amity (Aaron) Erickson and children Addie and Agnes of Champlin, MN; Josh Holland (Alyssa) of Springfield, MO; Jake Holland and children Emmitt and Beckam and (Fiance Erin and children Bentley, Brennan, and Bristol) of West Fargo, ND. He is survived by his mother, Evean Holland, and mother-in-law Millie (Breker) Schlekeway as well as his sister Julie Holland and her children and grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, extended family, many friends and cherished neighbors. He was preceded in death by his father Bernard Holland and father-in-law Buster (Elaine) Schlekeway, many aunts, uncles and cousins.
