MARILYN ALICE ROEHR

The funeral service for Marilyn A. Roehr was 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at First Lutheran Church in Britton. Rev. Corky Spitler will officiate the service. Burial will be at the Britton Cemetery.

Marilyn Alice Chesebro Hastings was born January 16, 1928 on a farm in McPherson County, SD near Forbes, ND. She was delivered at home during a beautiful January thaw to Laken W. and Mary (Montgomery) Chesebro. A month after she was born her father died. Her mother later married Cyril Hastings Sr. and he adopted Marilyn at the age of 10.

She attended grade schools in Dayton and Hecla, and graduated from Britton High School in 1946. Following graduation she went on to receive her teaching certificate from General Beadle College in Madison, SD in 1947. She taught in the Miller and Waverly Townships for a number of years. Growing up she attended the Methodist Church in Hecla, SD. She attended Sunday School and served local churches in the Dayton Township area during her teen years.

On September 4, 1948 she married Delmar Walter Roehr. They made their first home on a farm in Sisseton Township, and in 1956 bought a farm in Hamilton Township. In 1966 they bought the farm in Waverly Township. After Delmar’s death in 2010, Marilyn remained on the farm, and was still living on her own at 96 years old.

After marriage, she became a member at First Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School for six years. She loved the great outdoors, whether it was helping with farm work or relaxing and watching the mayflowers grow on the hill. She was a talented seamstress, enjoyed reading and writing, and was an excellent cook. In her later years she became a wonderful painter.

More than anything, Marilyn loved her family. She was proud of her children and treasured her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A woman with many titles – wife, mom, aunt, friend, grandma, another grandma and great Marilyn. She was loved by many, and will be dearly missed.

Marilyn passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at Marshall County Healthcare Center at the age of 96.
