GLADYS CHRISTENSEN
GLADYS CHRISTENSEN
Gladys Blanche Mathilda Norby was born September 25, 1922 at home in Sargent County, ND to Alex and Selma (Moe) Norby. Obeline Nickeson was the attending midwife. Gladys’ son Neil married Obeline’s granddaughter Linda. Gladys was born at the Norby home which is now the location of the Coteau des Prairie Lodge.
Gladys grew up with six brothers on the farm. She remembered ironing many white shirts for her brothers when they went out Saturday nights, playing baseball in the dry coulee near their farm during the dirty thirties and helping tend a very large garden.
Gladys walked two miles to Tewaukon #3 school. Many days she and her brothers walked into the southeast wind to go to school and then the wind switched to the northwest for their walk home. Gladys completed eight grades and then kept house for her brothers on the farm after her parents moved to Veblen.
She met her future husband, Andy Christensen, at a dance in Hillhead, SD. They were married September 22, 1948 and moved to the Christensen farm northwest of Veblen. They spent 50 years on the farm before moving to Veblen. After Andy passed away in 2007, Gladys moved to Dakota Estates in Lidgerwood. She enjoyed the 13 years she spent there thanks to the social life and good care of the employees. In 2020 she moved to St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge and lived there until her passing. She liked her home there too, as she accepted care from all the dedicated workers. Gladys was a wonderful cook and baker and loved being a grandma. After she moved to Dakota Estates, she sewed hundreds of potholders and embroidered many dish towels. Gladys was a proud member of the Veblen American Legion Auxiliary and was the last Gold Star Sister in that chapter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Andy and brothers, Kenneth, Lester, Robert, Lloyd, Maloy and Wenzel, brothers and sisters in law Mary Norby, Vera Norby, Raymond and Myrtle Christensen, Melvin and Peggy Christensen, Arne and Caroline Olson, Jerry Hinnenkamp, Edna and Palmer Pedersteun, Noble Graversen and eight nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sons Neil (Linda), Curtis and daughter Janelle (David) Vig all of Veblen, four grandchildren, Andy (Marissa Schafer) Vig, Candice (Dave) Stahl, Ross (Ashley) Vig and Cos (Lindsey Johnson) Amdahl and twelve great grandchildren.
