DANNY MERLE THAYER

DANNY MERLE THAYER

The Celebration of Life for Danny Thayer and Elaine Thayer will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Rose Hill Church of rural Langford, SD. Pastor Mike Honl will officiate the service.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Danny Merle Thayer, 75, of Cogswell, ND passed away on Sunday, January 19 at Four Seasons Healthcare Center in Forman, N.D.

Danny was born on December 7, 1949, to Delmar and Mavis (Stabnow) Thayer in Britton, S.D. Danny attended elementary school in Britton, S.D., and finished out his years in the Job Corps Training in Montana. He joined the Army in January of 1970 and served until he was honorably discharged later that same year.

Danny married Elaine (Bernstein) on April 5, 1969, in Britton, S.D. They were blessed with two children, Scott and Lisa. Danny was also blessed with being a grandpa to four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Danny spent much of his early adult years working for various farmers around the Britton area. He started his lifelong career of trucking for Doug Niesen Trucking and eventually started his own trucking company which he continued to operate until his health prevented it. Danny and his family moved to Hecla, S.D., in 1975. Here they spent many years until both Scott and Lisa graduated. After Hecla, Danny and Elaine moved to various locations around the area, eventually settling in Cogswell, N.D. Danny was a Sunday regular at the Rose Hill Church in rural Langford, S.D., where he and Elaine enjoyed going when they were able. Danny enjoyed their “rock and roll” music, as he referred to their contemporary music. When he fell ill, Elaine still tried to take him to the Sunday services. Danny enjoyed hunting and had fond memories of pigeon hunting at an old school with his family. As years passed, Danny continued to enjoy hunting until his health began to fail and that hobby became harder. He also loved to go fishing, especially for northerns. Danny and Elaine spent many hours together fishing in his ice shack on Silver Lake.

Grateful for having shared Danny’s life are his children: Scott Thayer and Lisa (Bruce) Thayer; grandchildren: Landon (Alesha) Thayer, Lexi (Jordan) Engelhart and Taylor Himanga; great-grandchildren: Madisyn, Tyler, Kirra, Sadie, Easton, Aubrey, Ella and Greyson; brother: Randy (Kathy) Thayer; sisters: Marlys (Neil) Behnke and Pam (Ron) Gehring; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind close friends Kevin Jensen and Chad Heimbuch.

Elaine, his wife of 55 years, went to her forever home on January 19 as well. Preceding Danny in death are his parents, Delmar and Mavis Thayer; sisters, Lee Ann Thayer and Linda Holmgren; granddaughter, Shelby Thayer; and niece, Kandi Hall.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Scott Thayer – 1506 S Melgaard Rd. – Aberdeen, SD 57401 or Lisa Thayer – 10805 396th Ave. – Frederick, SD 57441.
